Airtel’s mobile networks are set to be utilized to benefit women farmers in East and the Horn of Africa region by providing information-sharing tools, it was announced on Friday.

This comes shortly after the UN Women and Airtel Africa signed a memorandum of understanding whose terms include that UN Women should discover farmers to be included under this plan. And that Airtel would have to present and provide the suitable mobile answers to back women incomes and improve their effectiveness.

Andre Beyers, the Chief Marketing Officer of Airtel Africa, said the empowerment of women was critical to economic development, particularly in rural and agricultural economies.

“We are pleased to partner with UN Women and contribute to their agenda of gender equality and empowerment of women by leveraging the possibilities mobile telephony has to offer,” Beyers said in a statement.

Airtel Africa, in terms of deal, will establish a Farmer’s Information System, enabling women farmers to access real time information related to weather, changes to the policy environment, available support services and other areas.

Additionally, Airtel will also proffer Internet protocol messaging services and closed user groups.

Christine Musisi, UN Women’s Regional Programme Director for the East & Horn of Africa, said the new partnership would exploit the power of mobile telecommunications to empower women in rural and urban areas.
