Nigerian-owned African entertainment application Afrinolly has announced the launch of its app for Windows Phone and Windows 8.

Afrinolly, developed by Fansconnectonline (FCO)- which already exists on Blackberry, Nokia S40, and Java- is expected to allow users to watch full length Nigerian (Nollywood), Indian (Bollywood), and other African movies on the newly incorporated devices.

According to a representative of the company, Bobola Oniwura, “developing Afrinolly on Windows 8 has been an experience that was both challenging and interesting…” he said.

The company, backed by telecom giant, MTN, is a digital marketing agency that specialises in developing social media platforms and mobile applications that primarily promulgates Nigerian movie industry.

The Nigerian film industry, also known as Nollywood, is worth over $250 million with average film production placed at over 2,500 movies per year – 2,408, 2,514 and 2,621 in 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively.

The industry has grown to become the second largest film industry in the world in terms of number of annual film production, placing it ahead of Hollywood and only behind Bollywood.

With the addition of Afrinolly on Windows phone, the sector is expected to develop further.
