Bank cautions on the rise of food insecurity in Africa.

The report also says growth on the continent is threatened by food shortages in West Africa’s Sahel region, poor rainfall and conflicts that have left at least 13 million people vulnerable.

Africa’s Pulse records that Senegal, Cameroon an Northern Nigeria are particularly vulnerable. North Africa will also be affected by higher cereal prices as the region dependent on the imports of cereals for consumption.

World Bank’s Vice-President for Africa, Obiageli Ezekwezili affirms that, ”The famine in the Horn of Africa last year and the drought in the Sahel this year are cruel reminders that Africa, the continent that contributed the least to greenhouse gas emissions, is likely to be hurt by climate change.”

Apart from the food crisis, the report points that the Euro zone debt crisis and tighter economic policies in some large developing countries pushed African export lower in the late 2011.

In spite of this, Africa economies records a 5.9% economic growth, making it one of the fastest economic region.
