The 27th edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa is taking place in Durban, SouthAfrica from the 3rd to 5th of May 2017. Over 1200 participants from over 100 countries representing business, government, academia, civil society, media and the arts are attending this meeting themed “Achieving Inclusive Growth through Responsive and Responsible Leadership.”

According to Maxwell Hall, a member of the Public Engagement Team at the ongoing WEF on Africa, the meeting aims to move leaders to change the way they approach development planning by designing policies that allow everyone to benefit from economic growth.

The participants for today’s plenary sessions include:

  • Kanini Mutooni – Director, Investment, USAID East Africa Trade and Investment Hub
  • Benedict Oramah – President, African Export-Import Bank
  • Yonov Frederick Agah – Deputy Director-General, World Trade Organization (WTO)
  • Amanda Archibong – Manager, Partnerships (ARC UNWFP), African Risk Capacity
  • Edgar Chagwa Lungu – President of Zambia, Office of the President of Zambia
  • Wolfgang Schäuble – Federal Minister of Finance, Federal Ministry of Finance of Germany
  • Malusi Gigaba – Minister of Finance, Ministry of Finance of South Africa
  • Claver Gatete – Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning of Rwanda
  • Lesetja Kganyago – Governor, South African Reserve Bank (SARB)
  • Amadou Hott – Vice-President, Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, African Development Bank (AfDB)
  • Baldwin Ngubane – Chairman, Eskom Holdings SOC Limited
  • Jay Ireland – President and Chief Executive Officer, Africa, GE
  • Tonye Cole – Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Sahara Group Limited
  • Macky Sall – President of Senegal, Office of the President of Senegal

  • Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq – Chief Executive Officer, Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria
  • Jakaya M. Kikwete – President of Tanzania (2005-2015), Office of the President of Tanzania
  • John Dramani Mahama – President of Ghana (2012-2017), Ghana Government
  • Mbanda Epanty Agbor Nde – Legal Practitioner, D. Moukouri & Partners
  • Obiageli Katryn Ezekwesili – Senior Economic Adviser and Public Policy Analyst, Africa Economic Policy Development Initiative
  • Lindiwe Zulu – Minister of Small Business Development, Department of Small Business Development of South Africa
  • Caroline Atkinson – Head, Global Policy, Google Inc.

They will be leading discussions on several topics which include, “Fast-Tracking Economic Unification,” “Africa in the New Global Context,” “Green, Growth or Both?” “Electrifying All of Africa,” “Africa Economic Outlook,” “African-Led Health Systems,” “Building Trust Through Sustainable Institutions” and “Empowering Africa’s Digital Disruptors.”

Press conferences will be held on “The Launch of the Africa Competitiveness Report,” “the G20 Com­pact with Africa,“ “Africa has a skills shortage. How do we fix it?” and “Press Conference with the Co-Chairs of the World Economic Forum on Africa 2017.”

There will also be Issue Briefings on “Famine Crisis” and “Scaling Social Entrepreneurship.”
